Frequently Asked Questions

COMEBACK is used to describe a turn around to win a game even though the situation in a game was very bad without hope of winning.

To some gamers and parents, the battle with games may feel hopeless, i.e. games are winning, where you missed opportunities in life without a chance of winning. COMEBACK trains gamers to have mastery over games for a comeback in life. All hope is not lost.

The one who holds the control is the master. Game dependency occurs when the control of the gamer is given over to games. When games have the upper hand, the gamer’s reactions are controlled by the game. Such gamers find it almost impossible to not game and games become the master of their lives.

When a gamer has mastery over games, saying no to games is an exercise of dominance which requires inner strength that can be built over time.

World Health Organization at the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) defined Game Disorder as a pattern of gaming behavior. “For gaming disorder to be diagnosed, the behaviour pattern must be of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning and would normally have been evident for at least 12 months.

Under DSM-5 by American Psychiatric Association, for Internet Gaming Disorder to be established, at least five of the following criteria needs to be met within a year:

    1. Obsession with Internet games
    2. Withdrawal symptoms when not playing Internet games
    3. A build-up of tolerance–more time needs to be spent playing the game
    4. The person has tried to stop playing Internet games, but has failed to do so
    5. The person has had a loss of interest in other life activities, such as hobbies
    6. A person has had continued overuse of Internet games even with the knowledge of how much they impact a person’s life
    7. The person lied to others about his or her Internet game usage
    8. The person uses Internet games to relieve anxiety or guilt–it’s a way to escape
    9. The person has lost or put at risk and opportunity or relationship because of Internet games

Most gamers are not addicts based on the criteria above yet much disruption to lives can be experienced when one or a few of the criteria are met. COMEBACK wants to help you gain mastery over gaming by minimising losses at an earlier stage.

To stop playing games completely in this present world is not a practical goal. Games are an integral part of our lives, especially with the fast advancement of technology. Instead, we choose to build your inner strength and power to have mastery over games. This means that you are able to say no to games when you need to.

To answer this question, we will refer to the two previous questions.

We acknowledge the effectiveness of “cold turkey” from games. Yet, most gamers are not at the point of addiction as defined before. Instead of a drastic measure, we can first take a gradual approach for you to build stronger inner strength incrementally.

Practically speaking, to do a residential program in Singapore is very costly too. We will like to provide a more affordable and effective option.

We understand the importance of support from your loved ones. The encouragement and support from your family and friends are key to your success in making your comeback. During COMEBACK program, we do not encourage accompanying parents or friends to be present. Your family and friends emotional and moral support is always with you even when they are not physically present during COMEBACK.

COMEBACK is designed to allow many touch points in the context of a community so that you are not fighting to gain mastery alone. This is generally more enjoyable and fun than a one-to-one session.

We will recommend personal one-to-one consultation session(s) with a counsellor or psychologist when necessary. These sessions will be an additional cost on top of COMEBACK fees. We do not want to add this cost into COMEBACK when not everyone needs this service.
